Left Hand Yoga, located in Longmont, Colorado, came about through a series of synchronistic events that took place over the course of about a year, starting in the winter of 2016, or possibly from the time I got ahold of an illustrated book of yoga poses and started practicing when I was nine years old. Many of these events seemed mundane at the time and only took on significance later. The one I want to talk about here began with the night I met someone who had the same tattoo in the same place. I was struck by the sheer improbability of this happening, but I didn’t assign it any particular significance. It was only later when I related the story to a friend and she started speculating about what it might mean, while listened, looking at the small tattoo on my left hand, that it became important. Suddenly the words “left hand” came into my mind, and since we had been having a discussion about possible names for my new yoga studio, it suddenly clicked into place. In that moment my Left Hand Yoga had a name. To be honest, up until that time, I wasn’t aware that Left Hand, or left-handed, is the translation of the word Niwot, or that Niwot was the name of a famous Native American leader. I had been to the town of Niwot, but never really wondered where the name came from. As I researched this historical figure who lived and died in Colorado, however, I became more certain that the name was right. And no, we don’t have any beer. James Allison, Founder
